How I stop hurrying

I’m usually in a hurry. In a hurry to eat, in a hurry to listen to podcasts at 1.8x speed. I hurried to work early in able to hurry home early. This is not great for my mind.

Thus I’ve tried to find some hobbies that are hard to hurry.

I’m really into photography (shameless plug for my art site ericskoglund.com) and have in the past enjoyed film photography but have of course, not had time™ and resorted to my lovely nikon D7000. I recently got a hold of a Leica IIIc in great condition with a Summicron 50mm f/2 in even better condition and have started to get into it again. The great thing about using the leica and film; You. Can’t. Rush. It. First of all film is expensive so you don’t want to wase it. I have to prepare the film in order to load it into the camera (being from 1941 the camera needs a longer film lead). Even winding the film to the next frame takes a bit of time. Of course after that I have to develop the film which again I can’t rush if I want a good result. And then I need to scan the negatives. All of this takes time.

My second new hobby is even worse. I’ve taken up growing food. Potatoes (boil ‘em, mash ‘em, stick ‘em in a stew), tomatoes, basil, salads and chillies. Stick seeds in dirt, water and care for them and then maybe in a couple of months you can literally taste the fruits of your labour, and what a sweet taste it is.

I find it really hard, I want to see the pictures now, I want my tomatoes now. But I can’t and that’s great. I’m learning to have things take its time.
